Batumi City Court has sentenced a 23-year-old man arrested for sexual assault to 14 years in prison as a measure of restraint.
The decision was made by Judge Davit Mamiseishvili. The next sitting will be held on April 6.
“We do not agree with the decision made by the court and we will definitely appeal it. Not only in the Court of Appeals, but also in the European Court of Human Rights. There was no factual or formal reason for using detention. As for the threat of hiding, when the investigation started, my client was cooperating with the investigating authorities. When the child died, he was arrested at home, hiding nowhere. My client could not destroy the evidence, nor could he put pressure on the witnesses. We believe that the court decision is not substantiated and we will appeal. Said lawyer Irakli Shavadze.
For reference, after the death of the girl, the Ministry of Internal Affairs released information. According to it,the police arrested a man born in 1997 in Kobuleti on charges of penetrating the body of a minor under the age of 16.
